A True
Radius Curve Stair follows the arc of a circle
A Combination
Curved and Straight Stairway may be used in some cases depending
on space.
Though these stairs can be distinctive and solve space issues, they will
often cost more than a true radius stair
and the pitch change where radius and straight sections join will require
careful CAD planning to give a graceful
rail transition.

Supported
Staircases
have weight bearing walls underneath them, usually enclosing
a closet, half bath or basement stairwell beneath. |
 |
Inside
Radius Free-Standing Staircases
feature
only the inside radius of the stair as free-standing while the outside
radius is supported. |
 |
Free-standing
Staircases
do not have any intermediate supports. The staircase must bear its
own weight and provide stability without the structural support of
a wall. These staircases must be carefully designed and may require
engineering studies and the use of structural steel support. |
